Updates on the legacy of Martin Luther King Jr. A minister and activist, Marting Luther King Jr. was the leader of the American civil rights movement, starting in 1955 until his assassination in 1968. Born January 15, 1929, King served as a minister until his leadership of the 1955 Montgomery bus boycott made King a national figure in the civil rights movement. He led a number of protests after that, including the Albany Movement (1961), Birmingham campaign (1963), the March on Washington (1963) and the Selma voting rights movement in 1965. King was assassinated on March 29, 1968 in Memphis, Tennessee. Martin Luther King Jr. Day is a federal holiday observed annually on his birthday.
