He served in a number of leadership positions before becoming speaker, including Majority Whip and Majority Leader. His election to speaker was historic in that he did not receive enough votes for it until the 15th ballot, which had not happened since 1859. McCarthy's district encompasses a large portion of California's Central Valley, much of it centered in McCarthy's hometown, Bakersfield, CA.
