Updates on Clarence Thomas. An associate justice of the Supreme Court of the United States since 1991, Thomas was nominated to the Supreme Court by former President George H.W. Bush. Thomas is the second African American to serve on the court. Thomas' seat was previously held by the first African American to serve on the court, Thurgood Marshall. He previously served as the judge of the United States Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit from 1990 to 1991. Thomas' confirmation hearing for the Supreme Court was engulfed in controversy after Anita Hill accused Thomas of sexual harassment. Thomas was narrowly confirmed by the U.S. Senate in a 52–48 vote.
