METHODOLOGY

1. Overview

The Best New Product Awards (BNPAs) is the most credible and influential award consumer voted award for consumer products. The program follows a rigorous process of product selection, category definition, and research.

2. Product Nomination

Products were eligible for participation in the 2023 BNPAs if they were launched after January 1, 2022 and represents a meaningful product innovation. Meaningful competitive categories were constructed to ensure that each BNPA winner is truly a superior choice for shoppers. Products from retail or private label brands are eligible and encouraged to compete

Products are nominated for entry to the Best New Product Awards from a variety of sources:
- A call for nominations is run online allowing consumers to nominate their favorite new products.
- A call for entries is sent to marketers who can enter their new products into the program.
- BNPA program managers and researchers review store shelves, advertising, and industry publications to identify new products of interest to consumers.

3. Category Definition

Each category in the Best New Product Awards must fulfill several requirements:

- The category includes products from at least two manufacturers.
- No manufacturer can 'buy' a win.
- The category definition and name are meaningful to consumers.
- The relation between the competing products must make sense to consumers; the products must be true alternatives in-market.
- BNPA aims to include leading new products in each category.

4. Research and Voting

The Best New Product Awards includes polling of category shoppers and feedback from users of the competing products.

The polling of category shoppers is conducted via online survey. All voters are screened for participation in household shopping and must be purchasers of the specific category in order to vote on products within it. Respondents are recruited from multiple sources to ensure a broad sample representing a true cross-section of American shoppers. The final sample is weighted to a standard national profile of shoppers.

Randomly selected category shoppers are shown an image of the new product's packaging and a short factual concept description. They then rate the product's appeal and their intent to purchase.

Together this ensures that the opinions of real category shoppers and feedback based on verified product experience determine the BNPA winners.

5. Winner Determination

Final determination of the category winners is based on a set formula for the "Best New Product Award Score," calculated from appeal ratings among category shoppers combined with future purchase intent and product superiority ratings from real in-market buyers of the product. The highest BNPA Score determines the category winner. There is only one winner per category.
