America's Best Plastic Surgeons 2023

Choosing plastic surgery is a major consideration for patients, which can affect not only their outward appearance but overall health and confidence. Plastic surgery can be broadly categorized into two main areas: reconstructive surgery and cosmetic surgery. This type of surgery focuses on restoring, reconstructing, and enhancing the human body. It involves surgical procedures that aim to improve different body parts' appearance, form and function.

These surgeons undergo extensive training, including medical school and specialized residency programs in plastic surgery. It's worth noting that plastic surgery extends beyond aesthetic procedures. Plastic surgeons also play a significant role in reconstructing body structures after trauma, cancer surgeries or other medical interventions. They work closely with other doctors and medical professionals to provide comprehensive patient care, addressing functional and aesthetic aspects.

Once again, Statista and Newsweek are proud to publish America's Best Plastic Surgeons 2023 ranking, which awards the top plastic surgeons in the United States in five major categories: breast augmentation, liposuction, facelift, rhinoplasty, and eyelid surgery. Some doctors are recognized for multiple procedures.

Join me in congratulating these talented plastic surgeons.

Methodology Newsweek Article – America's Best Plastic Surgeons 2023

The America's Best Plastic Surgeons 2023 ranking awards the leading plastic surgeons in the U.S.
Plastic surgeons were awarded in five major cosmetic surgery procedure categories: breast augmentation, liposuction, facelift, rhinoplasty and eyelid surgery. Some surgeons were awarded for more than one procedure. The top 30 plastic surgeons in each cosmetic surgery procedure are ranked #1 to #30. The top 31-125 plastic surgeons for eyelid surgery, the top 31-165 plastic surgeons for liposuction and rhinoplasty and the top 31-175 plastic surgeons for breast augmentation and facelift are sorted alphabetically.

Plastic surgeons who exclusively offer reconstruction or non-elective reconstruction/correction were excluded from the survey. Plastic surgeons from the 20 U.S. states with the most plastic surgeons were included in the survey: Arizona, California, Colorado, Florida, Georgia, Illinois, Massachusetts, Maryland, Michigan, Missouri, North Carolina, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Tennessee, Texas, Virginia, Washington, Wisconsin.

During the survey period from March to April 2023, over 2,000 medical experts with knowledge of plastic surgery (doctors/surgeons, plastic surgery clinic managers and medical professionals) were invited to an online survey in cooperation with Newsweek. Over 8,400 votes were collected and analyzed for each procedure.

Scoring Model
A score was calculated for each surgeon based on the number of recommendations, a quality assessment and relevant certification.

In-State Recommendations
Participants were asked to name the leading plastic surgeons for each procedure in their own state. The order in which recommendations were provided was relevant to the ranking (number 1 has the highest weight). Self-recommendations were not allowed and led to disqualification. In-state recommendations constitute 45 percent of the overall score.

Out-of-State Recommendations
Participants were asked to name leading plastic surgeons for each procedure outside their own state (in one of the 20 states included in the survey). Out-of-state recommendations constitute 35 percent of the overall score.

Quality Score
For in-state recommendations, participants were asked to assess quality of care (e.g., consultation with doctor, complications, follow-up, outcome). For each recommended plastic surgeon, participants rated quality of care on a scale from 1 ("poor") to 10 ("excellent"). A quality score was assigned to each plastic surgeon. This score accounts for 15 percent of the total score.

Certification Score
The American Board of Plastic Surgery (ABPS) accreditation is a voluntary credential for plastic surgeons in the U.S. Plastic surgeons must have completed appropriate training and passed oral and comprehensive written exams covering all plastic surgery procedures. Plastic surgeons receive 5% towards their total score if they have a ABPS certification.

The rankings are comprised exclusively of plastic surgeons that are eligible regarding the scope described in this document. A mention in the ranking is a positive recognition based on peer recommendations. The ranking is the result of an elaborate process which, due to the interval of data-collection and analysis, is a reflection of the last 12 months only. Furthermore, any events following May 10, 2023, were not considered in the metrics. As such, the results of this ranking should not be used as the sole source of information for future deliberations. The information provided in this ranking should be considered in conjunction with other available information about plastic surgeons or, if possible, accompanied by a visit to the clinic. The quality of plastic surgeons that are not included in the rankings is not disputed.
