America's Best Maternity Hospitals 2023

Having a baby can be one of the most joyous and fulfilling experiences in life. But expectant parents also face a number of important decisions like selecting a doctor, creating a birth plan and choosing a maternity hospital. The best hospitals provide mothers and babies with the highest quality care from pregnancy through birth and even postpartum. To help you pick the best hospital for your family's needs, Newsweek and the global market research and consumer data firm Statista are proud to announce our ranking of "America's Best Maternity Hospitals 2023." Our list names the top 384 leading hospitals for maternity care in the U.S., divided into two performance categories: five ribbon hospitals (159 institutions) and four ribbon hospitals (225 institutions). Within each category, hospitals are listed in alphabetical order.

The evaluation is based on three data sources: a nationwide online survey in which hospital managers and maternity healthcare professionals (e.g., neonatal care providers and OB/GYNs) were asked to recommend leading maternity hospitals; medical key performance indicator data relevant to maternity care (e.g., a hospital's rate of cesarean births); and patient satisfaction data (e.g., how patients rated a hospital's medical staff for responsiveness and communication).

The America's Best Maternity Hospitals 2023 ranking awards the 384 leading maternity hospitals in the U.S.

Methodology:
The list is based on three data sources:

1. Nationwide online survey
From February to March 2023 over 10,000 hospital managers and maternity healthcare professionals with knowledge about maternity processes were asked to recommend leading maternity hospitals in the U.S.
Recommendations for their own employer/hospital were not allowed.
Participants were asked to rate the recommended maternity hospitals in several quality dimensions on a scale of 1-10: perinatal care, operative obstetrics, patient education, accommodation and service, and overall nurse and midwife staffing.
These assessments and the recommendations were used to determine the reputation score.

2. Results from patient surveys
Publicly available data from hospital surveys of patient experience during their hospitalizations. Survey topics included: cleanliness of the hospital, communication of the nurses/doctors, care transition, communication about medicines, discharge information, quietness, and staff responsiveness. Those data were used to determine the patient score. .

3. Hospital quality metrics
These are publicly available data from a variety of sources on indicators relevant to maternity care. From The Joint Commission, an independent, nonprofit hospital accreditation organization, data were available for: cesarean birth, perinatal care, as unexpected complications in term newborns per 1000 live births classified as overall, moderate and severe, and the advanced certification in perinatal care. Data on elective delivery, exclusive breast milk feeding, maternity morbidity structural measure, infection prevention and patient satisfaction was available from the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services. These data were used to determine the quality metrics score.
Based on predefined thresholds for each of the three data sources, awarded hospitals were grouped into two tiers: five-ribbon hospitals and four-ribbon hospitals.
