Dermatologists are the trained professionals who specialize in caring for the human body's largest organ, the skin. Dermatology is a medical specialty to diagnose, treat and prevent conditions and diseases related to the skin, hair, and nails. These doctors are crucial in maintaining skin health, diagnosing and managing various skin conditions and promoting overall well-being.

Advancements in technology and research continue to shape the field of dermatology. New treatment modalities, diagnostic tools and an understanding of skin biology contribute to improved patient care and outcomes. Dermatologists work collaboratively with other healthcare professionals, such as primary care physicians, oncologists, plastic surgeons, and rheumatologists, to provide comprehensive care for patients with dermatological conditions.

Dermatology is vital in promoting good health, treating skin conditions and helping individuals feel confident and comfortable in their skin.

Statista and Newsweek are proud to partner and award the leading dermatologists in the U.S. Due to the significant difference in services, the list is split by cosmetic and medical dermatologists. In total, 150 cosmetic dermatologists and 175 medical dermatologists were awarded and some were awarded in both specialties.

Methodology Newsweek Article – America's Best Dermatologists 2023

The America's Best Dermatologists 2023 ranking awards the leading 325 dermatologists in the US. Due to the significant difference in services provided, the list is split by cosmetic and medical dermatologists. In total, 150 cosmetic dermatologists and 175 medical dermatologists were awarded. The top 30 cosmetic and medical dermatologists are ranked #1 to #30. The top 31-150 cosmetic and top 31-175 medical dermatologists are sorted alphabetically. Some dermatologists were awarded in both specialties.

Dermatologists from the 20 U.S. states with the highest population were included in the survey: Arizona, California, Florida, Georgia, Illinois, Indiana, Massachusetts, Maryland, Michigan, Missouri, North Carolina, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Tennessee, Texas, Virginia, Washington, Wisconsin.

During the survey period from March to April 2023, over 2,200 medical experts with knowledge of dermatology (dermatologists, management/administration and medical professional in the field of dermatology) were invited to an online survey via Newsweek.com. During the survey period, over 5.400 votes for dermatologists in the 20 most populous US states were collected and analyzed.


Scoring Model
A score was calculated for each dermatologist based on the number of recommendations, a quality assessment and relevant certification.

In-State Recommendations
Participants were first asked to recommend leading dermatologists in their respective specialty (medical or cosmetic) in their own state. The order in which recommendations were provided was relevant to the ranking (#1 has the highest weight). Participants were able to specify a standout treatment in the cosmetic dermatologist survey (Laser, Injectables, Body Contouring). Self-recommendations were not allowed and lead to disqualification from the survey. Additionally, participants were asked to recommend leading dermatology for the other specialty. In-State recommendations constitute 45% of the overall score.

Out-of-State Recommendations
Participants were asked to recommend leading dermatologists in their respective specialty (medical or cosmetic) in any of the other 20 US states included in the survey. Optionally, participants could also name leading dermatologists for the other specialty outside their US state. Out-of-State recommendations constitute 35% of the overall score.

Quality Score
For their In-State recommendations, participants were asked to assess the quality of care (e.g. treatments, preventive care, use of most recent equipment) to further differentiate the perceived reputation of each dermatologists. Dermatologists who only received out-of-state recommendations were given a baseline score.
For each recommended dermatologists the participant rated the quality of care on a scale from 1 ("poor") to 10 ("excellent"). A quality score was calculated for each dermatologist with In-State recommendations. This score accounts for 15% of the total score.

Certification Score
The ABD (American Board of Dermatology) accreditation is a voluntary credential for dermatologists in the US.
Dermatologists certified by the ABD must have completed a rigorous training in an accredited program, as well as examinations. Dermatologists received 5% towards their total score if they have an ABD certification.

The rankings are comprised exclusively of dermatologists that are eligible regarding the scope described in this document. A mention in the ranking is a positive recognition based on peer recommendations. The ranking is the result of an elaborate process which, due to the interval of data-collection and analysis, is a reflection ofthe last 12 months only. Furthermore, any events following May 10, 2023, were not considered in the metrics. As such, the results of this ranking should not be used as the sole source of information for future deliberations. The information provided in this ranking should be considered in conjunction with other available information about dermatologists or, if possible, accompanied by a visit to the clinic. The quality of dermatologists that are not included in the rankings is not disputed.
