America's Best Children's Hospitals 2023

When your child is sick or hurt, you want nothing more than to make them well again. Sometimes that means a bandage and a kiss—other times, it means a visit to the pediatrician, emergency room, specialists, or even a stay in the hospital. Fortunately, every single day hundreds of thousands of doctors, nurses and other health care professionals make their way through the doors of pediatric hospitals across the country, where they perform what many parents would regard as nothing short of miracles.

Newsweek and the global market research and consumer data firm Statista are proud to announce our ranking of America's Best Children's Hospitals 2023. Our list names the leading hospitals for pediatric care in the United States in seven fields: Cardiology and Cardiac Surgery, Endocrinology, Gastroenterology and Gastrointestinal Surgery, Neonatology, Neurology and Neurosurgery, Oncology and Hematology, and Pulmonology and Thoracic Surgery. Results were compiled, and awards were presented based on three data sources—a nationwide online survey, ospital quality metrics and patient experience.

We extend a heartfelt thank you to the teams who make these the best children's hospitals in America.

The America's Best Children's Hospitals 2023 ranking awards the leading Children's hospitals in 7 pediatric fields: Cardiology & Cardiac Surgery, Endocrinology, Gastroenterology & Gastrointestinal Surgery, Neonatology, Neurology & Neurosurgery, Oncology & Hematology, and Pulmonology & Thoracic Surgery. The list lengths vary across fields: the top 50 hospitals are recognized for Cardiology & Cardiac Surgery, Endocrinology Gastroenterology & Gastrointestinal Surgery, Neonatology, and Oncology & Hematology. The top 40 hospitals are recognized for Pulmonology & Thoracic Surgery, and the top 25 hospitals are recognized for Neurology & Neurosurgery.

The list is based on three data sources:

1. Nationwide online survey
From April to May 2023 over 2,000 health care professionals and hospital managers with knowledge about pediatric care e.g., general and specialized pediatricians and nurses were asked to recommend leading children's hospitals in the US. Participants were asked to recommend hospitals in their primary sub-specialty as well as a secondary sub-specialty. Primary recommendations had a 70% weight of the reputation score, secondary recommendations had a weight of 30% of the reputation score.
The reputation score has a weight of 63.75% of the overall score.

2. Results from patient surveys
Google evaluations were taken into consideration for the patient experience score with a weight of 7.5% of the overall score.

If a hospital reported the HCAHPS survey to CMS, the patient experience score is reweighted to 15% of the total score. HCAHPS survey topics included: cleanliness of the hospital, communication of the nurses/doctors, care transition, communication about medicines, discharge information, quietness, and staff responsiveness.

3. Hospital quality metrics
These are publicly available data from a variety of sources on indicators relevant to pediatric care. Data on infection prevention, as well as vaccination rates of staff for Influenza and COVID-19, and patient satisfaction was available from Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services. From The Joint Commission, an independent, nonprofit hospital accreditation organization, data were available for hospital accreditations, national patient safety goals, and the advanced certifications. Accreditation data was also available from CARF International (Commission on Accreditation of Rehabilitation Facilities) and from the Foundation for the Accreditation of Cellular Therapy (FACT).

These data were used to determine the quality metrics score, which has a weight of 28.75% of the overall score.

Furthermore, events preceding or following the period May 23, 2022 – May 22, 2023 and/or pertaining to individual persons affiliated/associated to the facilities were not included in the metrics. As such, the results of this ranking should not be used as the sole source of information for future deliberations. The information provided in this ranking should be considered in conjunction with other available information about hospitals or, if possible, accompanied by a visit to a facility.
